UNGA-SPECPOL

AGENDA

About Committee

The Fourth committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Special Political and Decolonisation Committee, covers a variety of political issues, ranging from UN peacekeeping operations, special political missions as well as peaceful use of outer space. The United Nations General Assembly, comprising of all 193 member nations, discusses all matters covered in the UN Charter and is the only organ which allows all states to have equal representation.

For the 13th edition of LMCMUN, the General Assembly will be discussing the threats posed by militarisation and technological advancements in outer space. Space militarisation became a reality during the Cold War. Due to the significant technological advancements in space technology, this threat worsened over the years. Today, most of the countries are developing different kinds of space weapons to combat this threat. This is not only posing a geopolitical threat but also an ecological imbalance and an economic burden on all countries. Various internal and external conflicts, along with constant technological growth, the threat posed by space militarisation and weaponry keeps looming larger every day.

The United Nations General Assembly’s 78th Session’s Allocation for the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee- brings a heightened sense of responsibility to ensure peacekeeping of outer space, as we deal with the complexities of space security. Drawing on the varied experiences and perspectives of our member states, discussions will focus on making realistic and implementable strategies to fortify the Outer Space Treaty.

It is imperative that our deliberations align with the evolving global landscape and politics, ensuring that the proposed measures are relevant, effective as well as promote equal representation of all member states.

Discussing the Outer Space Treaty to counter militarisation and technological threats in outer space

Chairpersons' Address

Greetings Delegates!

We welcome you to the United Nations General Assembly-Special Political and Decolonisation Committee, which will be simulated at the thirteenth edition of La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations.

Addressing the militarisation of outer space is a critical matter often downplayed in international forums and with recent technological advancements, this issue presents a genuine threat. We are honoured to discuss its various aspects, foreseeing a comprehensive examination of the current state of affairs, realistic solutions, and a focus on the ever-evolving aspects of international cooperation. We encourage delegates to navigate through challenges to reach a consensus, reflecting the UN's commitment in ensuring peaceful use of outer space for the benefit of all nations.

If you ever see a Science student who is perpetually in the Humanities section, you have met your first chairperson- Rhianna Girotra, often referred to as “Did you mean Rihanna?” by Google. You will never catch her crying about her syllabus because she definitely isn’t aware of it herself. Rhianna suffers from a permanent addiction of Combiflam and Thums Up, keeping her awake till 4 a.m., therefore, making her everyone’s 4 a.m. friend, quite literally. Her day starts with explaining how the plot of Om Shanti Om (the movie) holds so much relevance to the human race and ends with her crying over Thermodynamics. Any Gilmore Girls and SRK movie references are the key to her heart which beats only for puchkas and aloo parathas. To sum it all up, a relentless and hardworking person who will leave no stone unturned to make this committee a success and that, is Rhianna Girotra for you.

Long story short, if you ever come across a 5’2’’ (still exaggerating) Commerce student passionately fighting over how Accounts is the only acceptable subject, you’ve found yourself your second chairperson- Shreyashi Rai Chaudhuri. If her life was Titanic, her iceberg would definitely be any four-legged animal, or well, a trigonometry sum. Please don’t be intimidated, she is in fact a short, 50-year-old who still believes that Nokia is the only way to go. If you ever hear her giggling in a very serious situation, just know that she remembered a joke made 10 months ago. Her messages aren’t complete without adding a couple of exclamation marks and full stops, with a side of commas. If you want to win Shreyashi’s heart, all you need to do is devote yourself to Bollywood (specifically K3G), Friends and balance sheets (save her). Jokes aside, if there is anything Shreyashi would willingly devote her time to other than accounts, it’s making sure that everything she does goes perfectly according to plan and that everyone around her has a good time, and we can’t wait to see her do the same with this committee.

Divided by our opinions on punctuations, united by our love for Shah Rukh Khan, we as chairpersons hope to have an interactive committee that not only offers dynamic discussions but also provides constructive yet realistic solutions which resonate universally. We are over the moon to host you this year and make LMCMUN 2024, a very memorable experience for you. All the best, we hope to see you soon!

Until May,

Rhianna Girotra and Shreyashi Rai Chaudhuri,

Chairpersons,

United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee,
