DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL'S ADDRESS

Dear Delegates,
Everything that exists in the plane of reality today is polluted by shades of misery and deceit. The world that we are exposed to bears little resemblance to the destructive path that the actions of humanity have carved for it. In an attempt to create an illusion of solace, we extend to you our warmest welcome to La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations 2024.
MUN is about looking beyond the overly simplified black and white. It’s about exploring the ambiguously defined grey and daring to tackle the intricate issues it poses. Since the first LMCMUN Conference in 2009, it has evolved into a platform where students have found a voice that tries to tackle these issues and bring about a difference, no matter how temporary or seemingly insignificant.
Jacinda Arden once said “When facts are turned into fiction, and fiction turned into fact, you stop debating ideas and you start debating conspiracy.” The committees being simulated in LMCMUN 2024, ranging from the Berlin Conference of 1884 to UNGA SPECPOL, discussing the Outer Space Treaty, will toe this fine line between fact and fiction. Delegates will decide if they will use their weapons to ignite the flames of conflict or use diplomacy to bridge the oceans of mistrust between nations.
While some degree of conflict may be necessary for the development of society, it is not hard to to be filled with a sense of hopelessness due to the ceaseless suffering that envelopes humanity today and how often those with blood on their hands are not held responsible. Thus, my hope for LMC MUN 2024 is that it instills in the delegates a desire for a world in which competing ideologies are kept in balance, systems of accountability prevent us from getting away with too much and fewer people believe that righteous ends justify violent means.
As the Deputy Secretary-General, I will leave no stone unturned to ensure an exciting, enriching and unforgettable three days of committee.
Until May,
Divyanshi Bajaj,
Chairperson,
Indira Gandhi’s Committee.
Deputy Secretary General,
La Martiniere Calcutta Model United Nations, 2024.
